Transport and Installation of Minimal Wellhead Platform, South East Asia
A Supermajor required a minimal facilities wellhead platform for the cost effective development of an oil and gas discovery offshore South East Asia. ICON was engaged early in the FEED stage for the platform design, and subsequently executed the Transport and Installation (T&I), drawing on ICON’s expertise in the ‘Rig-Install’ method which eliminated the significant cost of dedicated construction vessels for the project.

How it started
The Client initiated a programme of low cost development (LCD) projects, seeking to standardise a design and installation concept for rapid, continuous developments. ICON was engaged in the early FEED stage of the initial LCD project to leverage off ICON’s portfolio of low-cost unmanned platform designs. The field is located in 61m water depth and required four well slots.
What it became
ICON employed its field-proven ‘Rig-Install’ method utilising the project’s already-contracted Jackup Rig to perform the heavy lifts, eliminating the cost and risk of additional construction vessel(s) and offering a significant cost saving and reduced the risk to the project.
ICON assessed various proven Rig-Install methods, before landing on the ‘Sling Upending’ technique - this method offered the highest operability (i.e. lowest risk of weather stoppages) and leveraged ICON’s existing designs for the heavy lift rigging and other installation equipment.
ICON successfully executed the following Transport and Installation (T&I) scopes:
Preparations for Installation
- Design and procurement of complex heavy lift rigging and associated installation equipment;
- Design and installation of Rig modifications;
- Chartering of Marine Assets; Transport Barge, Anchor Handler, 3 Tugs and 2 ROVs; and
- Design and installation of a 6-point spread mooring system on the Barge.
Offshore Installation
- Assistance with WHP load out onto the Barge;
- Transport from quayside to the Rig on location;
- Jacket lift and upending;
- Conductor Pile installation;
- Grouting of the Pile/Leg annuli; and
- Topsides Lift, setdown and connection
